In its simplest form, if we were to take a dictionary definition, the phrase gourmet coffee is used to describe high-quality coffee.
However, the term gourmet can mean different things to different people. However, when discussing gourmet coffee, it can usually be broken down into one of two things:
It’s all in the bean
Most of the coffees sold in supermarkets are brewed cheaply and taste bitter. There are two types of coffee beans, Arabica beans and Robusta. Arabica beans are considered the premium, best-tasting type of beans.
However, whilst Robusta is less expensive to grow, it can provide that good tasting blend to any coffee. Gourmet can therefore mean a coffee made from 100% Arabica beans, or one that infuses different flavours and scents.
The best way to think of coffee beans is the way people think of wine grapes. Just like wine, coffee tastes different depending on the region that it's grown in, the coffee farm or vineyard that it's from, and the season. Just like wine, coffee comes from a living plant that can expire, so choosing carefully selected beans makes perfect sense. Those from the regions of South America or Spain...like ours, often offer a superior taste.
